What is the procedure for M.Sc/MS Admissions at IITM?

FIf you are looking to pursue an M.Sc or MS program in India, look no further than IIT Madras. IITM offers M.Sc programs as well as MS (by Research) programs in various fields. Here's all you need to know about admission requirements, eligibility criteria, and the application process for both PG programs:

M.Sc Programs:

IITM offers two-year M.Sc programs in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, which are ideal for students interested in research in their relevant fields. Admission to the M.Sc programs is through the JAM examination. The eligibility criteria include:

  • 55% aggregate marks (or 5.5/10) for Gen/OBC/EWS and 50% (or 5.0/10) for SC/ST and PwD applicants.
  • Chemistry: Bachelor's degree with 3 years of Chemistry, plus Mathematics at (10+2) level.
  • Mathematics: Bachelor's degree with 2 years of Mathematics.
  • Physics: Bachelor's degree with 2 years of Physics and 1 year of Mathematics.
  • Engineering degree holders have no additional educational requirements.

MS Programs:

IITM also offers MS programs, which are customized to the student, with a flexible schedule and duration. The eligibility criteria to apply are:

  • For MS programs in engineering, candidates need a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Sciences/Management with a valid GATE score and a strong academic background in relevant areas. Details can be found on the IITM website
  • For an MS in Management, a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with a strong academic record is required. Additionally, a good score in national-level exams like GATE (HTRA) or international exams like GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA) for OCI/NRI/Foreign Nationals is necessary.

Application Process:

The application process for both M.Sc and MS programs is entirely online and can be accessed through the IITM research portal. There is an application fee, the details of which can be found in the admission brochure.

Candidates must upload various valid documents/files (as applicable): 

  • Photo
  • Signature
  • Photo Identity Proof
  • Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS)
  • Person with Disability (PwD) certificate
  • UG Marks Statement/Degree Certificate
  • UG University Rank certificate
  • PG Marks Statement/Degree Certificate
  • PG University Rank certificate
  • National/International Level Exam score card/award letter/certificate
  • Work Experience Certificate
  • NHTRA Self Declaration
  • Research Proposal[PDF format] - only for Management Studies department


After application submission, candidates can expect shortlist announcements on department websites (accessible here). Shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email for additional tests or interviews, depending on the program. The Departmental Selection Committee will assess academic records, interview/test performance, and recommend suitable candidates to the Chairman, Senate for admission consideration.

Upon completion of their MS degree, students also have the option of directly applying to a Ph.D. program at IITM, provided they meet specific criteria.
