The Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras strives to be India’s best-in-class business school in emerging knowledge domains of management, with expanding global reach through effective engagement with academia, industry, government, and other relevant stakeholders. Being immersed in values such as providing world-class education and opening up enviable career avenues, the department fosters its students to be strategic innovators capable of new venture creation, performance excellence, and global engagement. It enables them to grow with entrepreneurial insights, and helps them develop environmental empathy, social responsibility, and a sense of corporate governance by integrating frontier management research with management theory and business practices.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is a two-year, full-time programme, that provides students with a well-rounded learning experience in terms of management theory and actual practice. The Executive MBA (EMBA) programme specifically caters to the learning needs of working professionals, conveniently designed to allow work-life balance through alternate weekend contact classes, while still maintaining academic rigor and a practice-oriented curriculum. DoMS also offers dual degree programs – the first being the Tech MBA programme, where the curriculum integrates and synergizes technology and management disciplines; and the second being the Masters in Quantitative Finance programme, where the curriculum is designed to link mathematical and computing skills with finance. These can be availed by undergrads of the institute in the form of IDDD programs.

In keeping with the research focus of the parent institution, DoMS offers a Masters programme in research (MS) to equip students to undertake rigorous, managerially-relevant research in various management areas as well as the flagship doctoral (PhD) programme which moulds students to pursue high quality research. The PGPEX-VLM is a unique one-year diploma program with a built-in manufacturing focus, that is jointly conducted by three institutes i.e., IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta. We have a post-doctoral research programme and a six month post-doctoral programme for women which provides opportunities for doctoral scholars to collaborate, work with the faculty members on innovative areas of research in management.  

DoMS faculty members are recipients of prestigious awards and recognitions, with international teaching and research experience in reputed universities across the world.  Their areas of specialization include finance, Human Resources and Organizational Behaviour, Information Systems, Integrative Management, Marketing and Operations. To incorporate a deep industry specific knowledge and process level understanding of organizations in various industrial verticals, the MBA program offers a course on industrial and business domains. In addition, every year industry trends are studied and course contents are updated or new courses introduced. The department has academic partnerships and student exchange programs with business schools across Europe, Australian and American Universities. It also offers Joint Ph.D. programmes with Curtin University, University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Passau.

Students from DoMS have bagged internships and placement offers with Google, IBM, Mckinsey & Company, Amazon, Accenture, Federal Bank, ICICI, Siemens, Freshdesk and many more. The Department has a number of sponsored and Consultancy projects in addition to entrepreneurial initiatives marked by social responsibility. MS (Entrepreneurship) students have started companies during/after their course at IIT Madras. These companies have been incubated by CTiDES (Cell for Technology Innovation, Development and Entrepreneurship Support) IIT Madras. Located in the space provided by DoMS, they move to either the Research Park of IIT Madras or to their own premises after reaching a level of self-sustainability. The Department also has a Centre for Research on Start-Ups and Risk Financing which has numerous publications and ongoing and completed projects.

Samanvay, the annual business fest conducted by the Department of Management Studies, is marked by a harmony between competition amongst some of the brightest minds in the country and interaction with business leaders and changemakers. Through Conclave, Samanvay strives to bring the best and the brightest business leaders to interact with participants. Conclave is a series of events where students have the chance to mingle with the elite of the business world, and industry leaders come together to share their knowledge and experience. DoMS also has cultural exchange events happening from time to time and the department is a vibrant and productive place to build a career and a versatile network, as testified by students and alumni.
