The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE for short) at IITM offers a plethora of academic and research opportunities to its students, scholars and research faculty alike. Despite being one of the oldest core branches in engineering, the curriculum is systematically revised to keep up with the trends and needs of the modern industry, while also preserving fundamentals. Countless electives and interdisciplinary courses offered by faculty ensure roundedness while industry collaboration and consultancy offer necessary exposure to students.
IITM offers the following degree programs in ChE:
- BTech (4yrs):
- Eligibility: Applicants must have met eligibility for qualifying JEE-Advanced
- Course (8 sems): The BTech program in ChemE is a comprehensive study in 12 core courses spanning various avenues of the field, from thermodynamics to reaction engineering; transport phenomenon to process control. Opportunities to take cross-cutting electives as well as state-of-the-art department laboratories give an edge to the students. Finally, short-term research projects invoke a sense of academic fervor in the minds of young students.
- MTech (2yrs):
- Eligibility: Applicants must have met the cutoff required for GATE
- Course (4 sems):The MTech course at IITM offers specialization in various fields that keep up with the fluid demands of the industry. The first half of the course covers coursework with various electives that give holistic exposure to students in fields such as Reactor Theory, Mathematical Methods of ChE, and Transport Phenomenon. Thesis advisors guide students through their academics to help them hone their skills in pursuit of their field of interest. State-of-the-art research projects in environmental engineering, process control, reaction engineering, transport phenomena, particle technology, semiconductor processing, complex fluids and rheology, microfluidics, etc., offered in the second half provide insight into elementary problems while sponsored research under the likes of ISRO, DST, DAE, BPCL, HUL, IOCL, Tata, Honeywell, Renault, GM, etc tackle key industrial challenges. The scope of research is broadly classified into:
- Fundamental studies
- Modeling of processes and equipment
- Development, characterization and processing of materials
- Process design and control, systems engineering
- Environmental engineering and waste reduction
- IDDD (BTech+1yr)
- Eligibility: Pursuing BTech in ChE in IITM and having a GPA >8 by the 5th semester
- Course (2 sems): The Interdisciplinary Dual Degree Program offered by IITM is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for BTech students to expand their horizons into cross-cutting academic disciplines. Adding an extra year to the normal 4 year BTech degree, students get to choose from 14 disciplines in everything from finance to data science. The coursework is largely research-oriented.
- PhD/MS: The Dept of ChE at IITM offers various posts as post-doctoral students to highly accomplished academics who want to make a difference. Most positions at this level are backed by a lucrative stipend and perks. Finally, the cutting-edge laboratories at IITM push meaningful work out for academic as well as industrial use.
