What is the IDDD Energy Systems program at IIT Madras?

Energy systems refer to the complex networks and mechanisms involved in the generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption of energy. These systems are crucial for powering our daily lives and the functioning of industries, transportation, and infrastructure.

The Interdisciplinary Dual Degree Program in Energy Systems at IIT Madras aims to provide students with essential knowledge and skills to tackle the ever-increasing energy demands of the world. The program emphasizes the integration of technology, materials, and ecological aspects of the development of energy systems and processes. By the end of the program, students are expected to understand the various domains of energy generation, conversion, storage, and conservation.

Who is eligible to apply?

Any BTech student of IIT Madras with minimum 8.0 CGPA by their 5th semester would be eligible to apply.

Curriculum and Courses

The curriculum spans 8 courses taken in the 7th to 8th semester. The core courses cover principles of thermal energy conversion, renewable energy technology, materials for energy storage and conversion, and energy economics. It provides a multidimensional understanding of energy and allows students to choose elective courses to explore specific aspects of the domain. Electives such as wind power, power electronics, distributed generation, fuel cells, and intelligent transportation can be selected based on individual interests and career aspirations. The program also includes an extensive project in energy-related topics during the 9th and 10th semesters.

Here are some of the courses offered in the program:

  • Principles of Thermal Energy Conversion
  • Science and Technology of Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion
  • Renewable Energy Technology
  • Energy Economics

A total of 157 credits need to be completed. The program also includes an extensive project on energy-related topics during the 9th and 10th semesters. Students can choose 36 credits worth of electives from MM, ID, CY, OE, etc branches. This set of carefully selected electives is provided which will enable the student to explore a particular aspect of the energy domain in greater detail.

Collaborations

Several renowned universities offer research programs in energy, some of whom collaborate with IIT Madras. A few of the Universities are:

  • Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA
  • Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, USA
  • Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, USA
  • North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA
  • RWTH Aachen, Aachen, Germany
  • Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, USA and others

What are the Future Prospects?

The IDDD in Energy Systems opens up recruitment opportunities from industrial leaders like ABB, L&T, Shlumberger, Siemens, Tata BP Solar and more. Students that complete the IDDD develop a competitive edge in both knowledge as well as hands on experience in the field of energy. Through the research oriented coursework, students also have the opportunity to pursue higher studies in several renowned universities globally, including Cornell University, Georgia Tech, Iowa State University, RWTH Aachen, TU Munich and more.
