What is TLR?

TLR, an integral part of the NIRF framework, delves into an institution's teaching, learning, and resource ecosystem. It offers a comprehensive view, evaluating how effectively an institution's resources are utilized for academic and research purposes. This parameter deeply looks into the institute's expenditure patterns, faculty qualifications, the degree of individual attention students receive, and the accessibility and utilization of educational resources like libraries, laboratories, and workshops. Ultimately, TLR aims to gauge how these factors collectively contribute to benchmark academic outcomes.

There are 4 sub-parameters that sum up to give the TLR score:

• Student Strength (SS) - 20 marks: This is based on the total number of students enrolled in UG, PG, and doctoral programs.

• Faculty-Student Ratio (FSR) - 30 marks: The optimum expected ratio is 1:10 to get maximum marks. For ratios less than 1:50, FSR is set to zero.

• Combined metric for Faculty with PhD and Experience (FQE) - 20 marks: This factor comes in handy while assessing the qualifications of the faculty and their experience in teaching and research. It takes count of permanent faculty with PhD and their respective experience.

• Financial Resources and their Utilization (FRU) - 30 marks: FRU is derived from the cumulative average annual spending per student on infrastructural resources like workshops, labs, equipment, library, conferences, and faculty and staff operational expenses over three years. It excludes hostel and mess expenditures, focusing on academic infrastructure and support.

• Teaching-Learning Centre (TLC) at IIT Madras collaborates with Texas A&M University and Wipro Technologies for faculty development and training programs to enhance course delivery and student engagement.

• Faculty undergo online/offline NPTEL workshops on holistic education, experiential learning, and gamification, offering over 730 courses for an immersive learning experience.

• IIT Madras' Central Library offers modern resources like e-journals, databases, and e-resources through e-ShodhSindhu, with off-campus access for faculty, scholars, and students. Departments have specific libraries and guidelines for resource use.

• The institution's central workshops and labs maintain cutting-edge facilities contributing significantly to academic and research outcomes. The P G Senapathy Centre is preparing for a National Supercomputing Mission setup for High-Performance Computing.
