If you are looking to pursue an M.Sc or MS programme in India, look no further than IIT Madras. IITM offers M.Sc programmes as well as MS (by Research) programs in various fields. Here's all you need to know about admission requirements, eligibility criteria, and the application process for both PG programs:
M.Sc Programmes:
IITM offers two-year M.Sc programmes in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, which are ideal for students interested in research in their relevant fields. Admission to the M.Sc programmes is through the JAM examination. The eligibility criteria include:
- Having at least 55% aggregate marks (or 5.5/10) without rounding off in the qualifying degree for Gen/OBC/EWS category candidates and 50% aggregate marks (or 5.0/10) for SC/ST and PwD category candidates.
- Chemistry applicants needing a Bachelor's degree with Chemistry as a subject for at least three years (or six semesters) and Mathematics as a subject at the (10+2) level.
- Mathematics applicants requiring a Bachelor's degree with Mathematics as a subject for at least two years (or four semesters)
- Physics applicants needing a Bachelor's degree with Physics as a subject for at least two years (or four semesters) and Mathematics for at least one year (or two semesters).
- Applicants with an engineering degree have no further educational restrictions
The MSc programs in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics require specific educational qualifications for each subject.
MS Programmes:
IITM also offers MS programmes, which are customised to the student, with a flexible schedule and duration. The eligibility criteria to apply are:
- For M.S programmes in engineering, candidates need a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree in appropriate Engineering/Technology/Sciences/Management with a valid GATE score and a good academic record in the relevant areas. Other criteria can be found on the IITM website.
- For MS in Management, a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any professional discipline of a minimum of four years duration or a Masters degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a good academic record is necessary. It also requires a good score or pass in a national-level postgraduate admission qualifying examination such as GATE for HTRA or an International-level postgraduate admission qualifying examination such as GMAT/GRE (Non-HTRA) for OCI/NRI/Foreign Nationals.
Application Process:
The application process for both M.Sc and MS programmes is entirely online and can be accessed through the IITM research portal. There is an application fee, the details of which can be found in the admission brochure. Candidates must upload various valid documents/files (as applicable):
- Photo
- Signature
- Photo Identity Proof
- Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS)
- Person with Disability (PwD) certificate
- UG Marks Statement/Degree Certificate
- UG University Rank certificate
- PG Marks Statement/Degree Certificate
- PG University Rank certificate
- National/International Level Exam score card/award letter/certificate
- Work Experience Certificate
- NHTRA Self Declaration
- Research Proposal[PDF format] - only for Management Studies department
Upon submission of the application, candidates can await the announcement of shortlists, which will be released on the department websites (accessible here). Shortlisted candidates will be directly contacted through email for a further test (depends on the programme) and interview. Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview and/or test, the Departmental Selection Committee will recommend to the Chairman, Senate the names of candidates found suitable for admission to the programmes.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted through email or listed on the department website.
Upon completion of their MS degree, students also have the option of directly applying to a Ph.D. program at IITM, provided they meet specific criteria.
